Super Mario Bros. Film, the film adaptation of the famous Nintendo games, has crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office, breaking the records that the title character usually accumulates in his journey. This value places the film as the largest video game adaptation ever made in terms of box office, surpassing the general numbers of warcraft AND Detective Pikachu.
To date, the animation has raised $260.3 million in the United States and $248.4 million internationally, topping out at a total of $508.7 million worldwide. The film is currently the biggest hit of 2023 at both global and domestic box office, surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania.
Produced by Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. Film spent decades in development. Part of the delay was due to Nintendo’s hesitation in bringing Mushroom Kingdom back to the big screen after the 1993 live-action adaptation failed, considered one of the worst productions ever made.
But Illumination, head of franchises My favorite evil AND sing, teamed up with Nintendo to do justice to the mustachioed plumber and his brother Luigi. Indeed, Illumination founder Chris Meledandri co-produced the film with Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo designer who created Mario, as well as Zelda and Donkey Kong.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic Super Mario Bros. Film, which features a voice cast consisting of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black. The film had a production budget of $100 million, which is considered cheap for an animation. Pixar and Disney movies, for example, often cost twice as much.
Among other notable achievements, the film is now the second biggest animated film since 2019 in terms of global box office, ahead of Demon Slayer – Mugen Train: The Movie ($494 million) and behind Minions: The Rise of Gru ($942.5 million).
With all of this success, a sequel or spin-off is to be expected Super Mario Bros. Filmshowing in Brazilian cinemas.
