The energy and environment ministers of the G7 countries reinforced a “strong commitment to decarbonisation and other efforts to mitigate the climate crisis” this Saturday (15) on the first day of the summit in Japan.
The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto, told ANSA after the conclusion of the works.
“This first day went well, we saw a strong commitment in the concrete assessments of the final decarbonisation objectives, the part on the climate, electricity, the steps to go, in addition to the issue of light and heavy vehicles in a parallel path to the assessments of the EU,” he said.
According to Pichetto, “the adjustment of the agreement points for the final document is still ongoing, which will not be finalized until tomorrow’s press conference.
“As we drive forward ambitious climate action, our voice must be louder, our message clearer, our example must lead,” he said.
The Italian minister also explained that “COP28 in Dubai offers a key opportunity to relaunch climate action and it is expected that there will be “the closure of the first ‘Global Balance’ since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, to make the point what has been done, but you don’t need to wait for the result to understand if you need to act”.
Pichetto recalled the need to “correct our current trajectory”, in order “not to increase climate-related risks”, which would require “drastic measures to reduce emissions in the coming years with growing environmental, economic and social costs”.
Attack – Parallel to the G7, the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, was forced to rush out of an event after an explosion at a port in Wakayama, a city in southwest Japan.
According to the authorities, a 24-year-old young man is the alleged author of the explosion caused during the election rally. The man lives in the city of Kawanishi, Hyogo, and was immediately stopped by the security forces. He’s under arrest.
Official sources told public broadcaster NHK that two cylindrical objects were found, one of which exploded, while the other was seized by the authorities. No one is hurt.
