The quality of the epic drama starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix did not prevent small mistakes.

Despite its unforgettable battle sequences, impeccable cast and incredible soundtrack, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator also has – if you look closely and bother to study it closely – a few minor mistakes. After all, it’s practically impossible not to make a gaffe here and there in an epic drama of this scale, with a huge amount of extras, special effects and visual effects.

In the story, Russell Crowe lives Maximus Decimus Meridius, a notable Roman general who discovers that the already elderly and dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) intends to pass the throne to him. Disgusted by his father’s decision, Cómodus (Joaquin Phoenix) kills him, assumes power and orders Maximus’ execution. However, the man manages to escape and hides under the identity of a slave and gladiator of the Roman Empire.

While they’re nearly invisible when watching the film at normal speed, some errors can literally throw you out of the story once they’re identified. One of them is set during the memorable scene of the battle between Maximus’ companions and the Carthaginian barbarians, in the center of the Colosseum.

As the gladiators are violently assaulted by their much better armed opponents, take a good look at the chariot that we see go by at exactly 1 hour, 26 minutes and 24 seconds, just before one of the warriors is cut in half.

On the left side of the screen, when we stop the film at the right moment, we can see the soles of a pair of trainers worn by a technician, apparently kneeling inside the carriage, right next to the actor who is piloting it. Hard to focus on the action of the scene when you realize such a flaw! But that is not all.

In fact, just 12 seconds later, at 1 hour 26 minutes and 36 seconds, another wagon appears and flips sideways after colliding with the wall. At that precise moment, the impact lifts a black sheet that should have covered a gas cylinder, and the device then appears sharp on the screen, in the space of a quarter of a second.

For the curious, here’s a tip: Gladiator is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Star+. Can you find more bugs? tell us!
