Why Daniel Radcliffe Doesn’t Watch Harry Potter Films

The actor debuted as a child in the film adaptation of JK Rowling’s books, responsible for raising a fortune at the box office

Although he has worked in a large number of films and plays, Daniel Radcliffe still remembered for his work as the protagonist of the saga Harry Potter. The film adaptation of the books by J.K. Rowling earned eight films and more than $13 billion at the box office.

At the same time that he became famous worldwide for his work, the actor was just a 12-year-old when he premiered the first film and a 22-year-old teenager at the time the eighth was released. So it’s only natural that he considers himself a better artist today than he was in his youth.

However, it gets to the point where Radcliffe even avoids watching the feature films. In a 2007 interview with Deseret News (via Cheat Sheet), he already admitted that the process of reviewing his work in front of the cameras in that franchise is something very “destructive” to do.

“For me, watching the old movies is an almost totally destructive thing. I keep torturing myself when I try to do this. You know, I was very young. I cannot be held responsible for the performance I gave in the first two films: I was between 11 and 12 years old. it wasn’t like Dakota Fanning, who just managed to do it. It was a child’s performance.”

Mentioned by Daniel, Dakota was only 7 years old when one of her first works, the film A love lesson (2001), hit theaters. For her performance, she was even nominated for the SAG Awardsbeing the youngest to achieve this feat.

The same argument was repeated by Radcliffe in a 2012 interview with QA. Everything indicates that he always compared his performance with that of other young colleagues.

“Acting is something that doesn’t necessarily come naturally to me. It’s certainly not as natural as it is for, say, Haley Joel Osment or Dakota Fanning, who were doing adult performances by the age of ten.”

Physical resemblance guaranteed work?

Also in the interview quoted by QA, Daniel Radcliffe recognized as fair a controversial point of his trajectory. The actor agreed with criticism that he was only cast as a child, due to his physical resemblance to the character as envisioned by JK Rowling in the books.

“I think there’s a perception that we got the parts because we looked the right way. I think that’s probably fair enough.”

Daniel Radcliffe learned from mistakes

In another statement, now empire in 2011, it was Daniel Radcliffe’s turn to ensure that he learned from the mistakes made throughout his career. According to the artist, it took some time for him to discover that his acting was criticized, probably because he was shielded by his family and the film’s production team.

“I only recently became aware of the problems people had with me in movies. People are obviously entitled to their opinions. But we learn from our mistakes. I’m at the age most actors would be while in drama school. Having debuted so early turns out to be a double-edged sword. I had the incredible privilege of working with these fantastic actors for 10 years and learning from them, but I also had – and we all had – the slight curse of everyone watching, basically, our acting exercises.”
