It’s one of the most expensive TV series ever produced, and beyond a mere failure, it’s almost an industry disaster before it’s even aired! But it seems that the live-action adaptation of the One Piece manga is not doing well, according to the feedback from the test screening organized by Netflix.
According to the Divinity Seeker Twitter account, which is known for its reliable sources, the series has generated so much backlash that some of its episodes are currently being rewritten to remedy the situation. in his words, “The special effects are terrible, but the story makes no sense to those who haven’t read the manga”.
But that’s not all, fans of the original work will also have something to criticize about the series, as the overall theme of the comics was not respected at all by this live-action adaptation!
Thus, Episode 1 consisted half of Luffy’s childhood flashback, while members of the Straw Hat crew (Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji) are hurriedly introduced in the last fifteen minutes of the same episode.
From a Netflix-related source:
• Avatar: The Last Airbender won’t come out until 2023, but Netflix thinks it’ll be their Stranger Things
• One Piece tested horribly, the CGI looked bad and the story didn’t make sense to the fans, and they’re rewriting entire ep’s— Divinity Seeker (@DivinitySeeker1) April 13, 2023
The One Piece series, produced on a budget of around $100 million, is expected to hit Netflix next fall. Delays are still likely, especially if episodes are rewritten and then returned. It is not known if the digital effects will be reworked to offer a more suitable result like what was done in the Sonic movie.
Luffy’s adventures taught us to never lose hope, but when it comes to the One Piece series, it seems that Netflix has finally learned its lesson from the failure of the Cowboy Bebop adaptation…
Just a reminder that One Piece Manga Volume 104 (Glénat Editions) will be available this Wednesday, April 19th at all bookstores!
