The measure is the reaction to the criticism of the activist’s conviction
The government of Russia summoned the ambassadors of Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom this Tuesday (18th) to protest against an alleged “interference” by these countries in internal affairs.
The measure comes after criticism by Western powers of the conviction of activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, an opponent of Vladimir Putin’s regime, to 25 years in prison for treason and dissemination of “false” information about the war in Ukraine.
“The ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada have been recalled for flagrant interference in Russia’s internal affairs and activities incompatible with diplomatic status,” read a statement from Moscow’s Foreign Ministry.
The United Kingdom even summoned the Russian ambassador in London to condemn Kara-Murza, who also holds British citizenship, and called the lack of respect for human rights in Russia “alarming”.
The activist is known for denouncing the corruption and authoritarianism of Putin’s regime and is critical of the invasion of Ukraine.
