J-Hope, a member of K-pop group BTS, began his mandatory military service in South Korea on Tuesday, the second band member to do so.
The singer kept a low profile when a van carrying him entered the site of his military enlistment ceremony in Wonju city, about 87 kilometers from Seoul, Yonhap news agency reported.
“I’ll come back later,” the singer whose real name is Jung Ho-seok said in a post on fan platform Weverse on Monday, alongside a photo of his shaved head. More than 10,000 fan comments wished him safe return after completing his military duties.
Spokesmen for Hybe, who owns the band’s agency, declined to confirm details of his enlistment.
J-Hope, 29, is the second member of the seven-piece band to enlist. Jin, the eldest, joined the army in December.
All able-bodied men in South Korea between the ages of 18 and 28 must do military service for 18 to 21 months.
The military conscription of BTS members has attracted the attention of not only fans, but also South Korean politicians.
Some MPs have floated the idea of giving the affected group an exemption from compulsory military service to allow them to continue performing.
However, the band’s agency said last year that all members intend to complete their military service by 2025.
