The actress could have gotten into Marvel much earlier.
Nicholas Hoult has recently made headlines for revealing that he lost roles in ‘The Batman’, ‘Mission Impossible: Death Judgment’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The actor is not the only one. In fact, now we have known another case that may surpass him in that of rejecting jobs in films that have later been very successful. And here comes the case Rachel McAdams. Now an article has been published in Bustle where it is disclosed that the actress turned down several major roles consecutively in the mid-2000s.
As revealed in the interview, McAdams turned down offers for – get ready to catch your breath, big names are coming – ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Mission Impossible III’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Super Agent 86’. All this in a total period of two years. At that time she moved to her native Canada after her rise in Hollywood with ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘El Diario de Noa’.
“There are certainly things like ‘I wish I had done that’“said the actress. “(But) I take a step back and say: ‘That was the right person for it’“.
Those five feature films that McAdams turned down, released between 2006 and 2008, ended up being blockbusters. ‘Casino Royale’ revived the James Bond franchise with Daniel Craig in the role (presumably McAdams would have played Eva Green’s role in the film), or the first Iron Man film, one of the first impulses of the Marvel Cinematic Universe . However, McAdams entered that great superhero universe a little later with ‘Doctor Strange’ in 2016, reprising the role of Dr. Christine Palmer in 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.
“I felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that was being given to me, because I knew I was in such a lucky place,” she said of turning down these movies and taking a two-year break from Hollywood while her career was on the rise. “But I also knew that it didn’t quite fit my personality and what I needed to stay sane.. There were definitely some anxious moments where I wondered if I was throwing it all away and why I was doing it. It took me years to understand what I was intuitively doing“.
McAdams has no regrets, however, and many of his early films like “Mean Girls” and “Noa’s Diary” remain classics. The former is currently getting the musical treatment of a new movie based on Tina Fey’s Tony-winning Broadway adaptation. Reneé Rapp is stepping into the shoes of McAdams’ character, Regina George, after playing the role on Broadway. Would Rachel McAdams make a cameo on stage? “If Tina (Fey) sees it that way, I’ll be there for sure.”
The actress’s next feature film is Judy Blume’s adaptation ‘Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret’which will be released in the United States on April 28 (it does not have a release date in Spain).
