New cold records in the South

The strong mass of cold air of polar origin that acts on the continent yesterday caused a drop in temperatures in many areas of the south of the country. Today, Thursday 20 April, cold dawns and extremely low temperatures over many areas of central-southern Brazil.

Double cold record in Porto Alegre

LAST HIGH YESTERDAY – The presence of cold air of polar origin, the large amount of clouds during the day and the moderate and constant wind prevented a strong increase in temperature in Porto Alegre. This Thursday’s high was just 19.9C, the lowest maximum temperature of 2023 so far, according to measurements by the National Institute of Meteorology.

LOWER MINIMUM THIS FIRST DAY – As expected, Porto Alegre is already registering the minimum of the year 2023, so far, this morning, with 11.2°C at 3am. The lowest minimum temperature so far was 12.5°C on February 19. Today’s minimum temperature should drop further in the next few hours, the minimum of the day is recorded between 6 and 7 in the morning. But for now… it’s already a record!

Record cold in Curitiba

The temperature dropped even more overnight yesterday and early this morning and so far we already have the lowest temperature of the year in Curitiba, with 10.6°C at the automatic INMET station. The gusts of wind reached 44.6 km/h, due to a cyclone near the coast of southern Brazil, a factor that intensifies the thermal sensation of cold. Thermal sensation is 5.5°C at 3am.

Cold record in Florianópolis

Sunrise this Thursday, April 20, was the coldest of 2023 so far in Florianópolis. From the AUTOMATIC measurement of the National Institute of Meteorology, the minimum temperature was 12.4°C. The previous record for the lowest temperature this year was 15.6C on April 19 yesterday.

ATTENTION! These are preliminary data. The temperature drops even more and the lowest temperature of the day will occur between 6am and 7am.
