He is accompanied by Rufus Sewell, who we saw in The Legend of Zorro, the Wizard of High Castle series, and who we recently saw in Old by M Night Shyamalan.
The rest of the cast includes David Geass (Interstellar, Annihilation), Rory Kinnear (No Time to Die, Years and Years), Ali Ahn (How to Raise a Superhero), Ato Essandohi (Elementary), Miguel Sandoval (Station 19) and Nana Mensah (13 Reasons Why Why), by the way.
Is it worth checking out?
While Netflix is still basking in the success of The Night Agent, the platform is already painting another thriller that could also be a hit. The series La Diplomate, available from April 20, is a new political and action drama that you should also enjoy.
Deborah Kahn, the showrunner of this eight-episode series, used her experience as a screenwriter on Homeland and the White House to deliver a well-crafted and effective political thriller, despite some inconsistencies and sluggish plots that don’t really fit the series’ believable reality.
It must be said that it is surprising to see the White House choose to promote the likes of Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) to the ranks of a diplomat and field agent far from convention. Against all odds, someone who usually resolves conflicts in difficult areas like Afghanistan will end up as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom.
This highly popular new feature is a sort of probationary period for a potential Vice President of the United States. For realism, we’ll go back. But if we ignore that and focus on the new ambassador with lots of twists and turns, we’ll quickly get caught up in La Diplomate’s game.
Because Deborah Kahn’s series is based on effective pacing, exciting intrigue and a ruthless heroine who must face complex political issues, defuse international crises, establish strategic alliances and adapt to her new prestigious environment, which leads to an exciting clash of cultures and conventions.
But La Diplomate also has its share of drama, especially when it focuses on the internal conflicts of its heroine, who must also manage her fragile relationship with husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), also a diplomat with an image and power as infamous as They are useful and who especially finds it difficult to see his wife in such a high position.
Somewhere between Homeland, Scandal and Mrs. Secretary, this new political thriller has all the ingredients to convince the subscribers of the platform and stop them on the effective last cliff, leaving the door open for a potential 2 seasons, if we want to be deeper and more demanding in some respects.
