Verdão have not won in five matches in the continental competition
In addition to going in search of his first victory in the current edition of liberatorsPalmeiras want to end an unusual lack of competition in the competition: they are already five games without a win. Verdão tries to avoid reaching the negative record this Thursday (20) against Cerro Porteño-PARat 21:00, in Morumbi, for the second round of the continental group stage.
Under Abel Ferreira, Alviverde had never gone more than two games without a win in the Libertadores, and now it’s five. Check out Palmeiras’ last five matches in the competition:
3/8/22 – Atlético-MG 2 x 2 Palmeiras
08/10/22 – Palmeiras 0 x 0 Atlético-MG
08/30/22 – Athletico PR 1 x 0 Palmeiras
9/6/22 – Palmeiras 2 x 2 Athletico-PR
5/4/23 – Bolívar-BOL 3 x 1 Palmeiras
If the Paraguayan team does not win this Thursday at the Morumbi, Verdão will overcome their biggest losing streak in the competition, occurred between 2001 and 2005:
23/5/2001 – Palmeiras 3 x 3 Cruzeiro
30/5/2001 – Cruise 2 x 2 Palmeiras
7/6/2001 – Boca Juniors-ARG 2 x 2 Palmeiras
13/6/2001 – Palmeiras 2 x 2 Boca Juniors-ARG
2/2/2005 – Tacuario 2 x 2 Palms
Therefore, Abel must go with full strength for the confrontation, as Palmeiras also made their debut in a 3-1 defeat against Bolívar-BOL, in La Paz on 5 April. On this occasion, the Portuguese coach spared the starters aiming for the final of the Paulista Championship.
Verdão must take the field against Cerro Porteño with: Weverton; Marcos Rocha, Gustavo Gómez, Luan and Vanderlan (Piquerez); Zé Rafael, Gabriel Menino and Artur; Dudu, Endrick and Flaco Lopez.
Cerro Porteño-PAR is the opponent who has crossed Palmeiras’ path the most in the history of Libertadores: 12 games, with six wins, four draws, two defeats, 25 goals scored and ten conceded – Boca Juniors-ARG, Peñarol – URU and São Paulo appear next, with ten matches. The rivals last met in the round of 16 in 2022 and Verdão won both games: 3-0 in Paraguay and 5-0 at the Allianz Parque.
It is worth remembering that the first two of each group advance to the round of 16, while the third will play the Copa Sudamericana. Last season, Palmeiras reached the semifinals of Libertadores. In the group stage, Verdão finished with first position and 100% success, picking up all 18 possible points, in the best season in history.
In the round of 16, the Palmeiras team faced Cerro Porteño. In the quarter-finals, he qualified on penalties against Atlético-MG. In the end, he ended up losing his place in the final against Atletico.
