“Peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches… I… LOVE… YOUUUUUUUU”
“When people talk about music in 2023, only 4 names matter: Number one is Bowser. Number 2, Bowser. Number 3, Bowser. And number 4 is surely Megan Thee Stallion.”
Jack Black dedicates these words to his character in ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie’, the villain Bowser, on the occasion of the ballad that he has released along with the film and that could be (and is) a firm candidate for the Oscars 2024 for Best Original Song.
‘Peaches’, Jack Black’s song in ‘Super Mario Bros; The movie’ that has slipped into the Billboard top 100 this week and is reaping success at the level of the film that contains it, the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all timeis becoming a phenomenon on the Internet, and the fun personality of Jack Black is not hesitating to seize the moment.
The song shows Bowser’s love (it’s not love what you feel, it’s obsession) for the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, PeachesMario’s love interest in the video games and in the movie itself.
“‘Peaches’ isn’t just a moment from ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie,’ it’s a milestone in music history. When I first sing those opening notes, ‘Peach, you’re so cool,’ you can notice how the energy in the room changes.”
Jack Black, singer of the duo Tenacious D (who already starred in his own film in 2006 ‘Tenacious D: Hitting the Note’) and actor in other films in which music is very important such as ‘School of Rock’ (it is essential to see it in the original version, please), he has known breathe his crazy and funny way of being into a character who, let’s not forget, is the bad guy in the movie.
Black composes and performs the song, although at first he was not so sure whether to accept the challenge: “I think we had been recording the voices for about a year when [los directores Aaron Horvath y Michael Jelenic] They told me for the first time. They said, ‘How would you feel if Bowser sang a song?’ And I was like, ‘Ooh, I don’t know. I am very protective of my singing career with my band, Tenacious D,” Black told IGN. “’I mean, are we going to do a musical? If so, then I want to listen to the music before agreeing to do it.’ So I said, ‘Let me hear what you got, what you got?’ They sent this little song, and I couldn’t deny that it was funny.. I was like, I get it. I see why you want Bowser to do this, tickling the ivories and singing a love song to Peaches. I was irresistible”.
The Bowser actor got to work with producer John Spiker, and they turned a 30-second sample into a full song.. “I sent it back to them and they said yes I was over the moon. He was super excited. And then I also thought, is this really going to be in the movie? And then, by God, they put it in the movie,” Black notes.
“The fact that [Bowser] He has this sensitive, insecure side and this romantic kind of unrequited love is fun,” adds Black. “That’s the great juxtaposition of these two sides of Bowser, the unexpectedness of it. This song is delicate and romantic, but it also has a dark side.. It’s also a kind of greedy love and it’s a kind of jealous love, and it’s wanting to control Peach’s love. So it’s like, that’s love? I don’t know. But it’s an interesting thing to exploreand it was fun working on that song.”
Then came the challenge of recording a video clip with an Elton John air, of which you can see the “how it was made” just on these lines. We would stay to live in this video.
