The iconic characters of d’Artagnan, Athos, Aramis, Porthos, Cardinal Richelieu and his spy Milady de Winter are already part of popular culture. Its various film adaptations, with different casts and productions, have shown the values of loyalty and camaraderie and have contributed to the dissemination of the work through successive eras and generations..

In this new homage to the famous work by Dumas, this new adaptation of the adventure will unfold in two films, ‘The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan’ and ‘The Three Musketeers: Milady’, directed by the filmmaker Martin Bourboulon (director of some very successful films such as ‘Eiffel’ or ‘Mummy or Daddy’). Now the first part has arrived (for the second we will have to wait a little longer).

D’Artagnan is an intrepid young man, he is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. When he arrives in Paris, he tries by all means to find his attackers. However, he is unaware that the search for him will lead him to the heart of a war in which the future of France is at stake. Together with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, three brave musketeers of the king, d’Artagnan confronts the dark machinations of Cardinal Richelieu. However, it is when he falls madly in love with Constance Bonacieux, the queen’s confidante, that d’Artagnan will really put himself in danger. Well, this passion will take him on the trail of who will become his great enemy: Milady de Winter.

This new version will feature the participation of such prestigious French film stars as Eva Green (‘Casino Royale’), Romain Duris (‘Eiffel’), Louis Garrel (‘Little Women’), Vicky Krieps (‘The Invisible Thread’) and , of course, Vincent Cassel.

In FOTOGRAMAS we have had the opportunity to speak with the French actor. He starred in films such as ‘Black Swan’, ‘Irreversible’, ‘Hatred’, ‘Irreversible’ or ‘Eastern Promises’ among many others.

Regarding the work on this new film, Cassel acknowledges that, since the story returns to its French origins, there is an intention to make it “truer”.

His character, Athos, goes through several moments of tension (starting with his meeting with d’Artagnan to going through scenes of life and death). With such a broad career, and with productions of various kinds, Cassel has gone through different circumstances throughout her life. When pointing out one, he especially remembers how the cinema offered him moments that changed his personal life: it was precisely in Madrid where he met his later wife, the actress Monica Belucci. Or even when he worked at a very young age on ‘Hate’, one of his top jobs and now considered a cult film that brought him together with Matthew Kassovitz. That is to mention some of the innumerable anecdotes about him that he will have compiled in so many decades of work.

‘The Three Musketeers’ is available in theaters from April 14.
