Russian fighters bomb city in own country

The blast injured residents, opened a 20-metre crater and damaged cars and buildings in Belgorod on the Ukrainian border. Supersonic plane “accidentally discharged ammunition”, according to the Russian Defense Ministry an explosion and the injury of three people.




Video footage posted on social media showed piles of concrete in the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken glass. One photo shows what appears to be an overturned car on the roof of a shop.

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced a state of emergency at dawn and said on Friday there was a 20-metre-wide crater in one of Belgorod’s main streets. He added that four cars and four apartment buildings were damaged.

Three people were injured, he said. “Thank God there are no deaths,” Gladkov said in a statement released on Telegram, adding that residents were evacuated from an apartment building during the night.

Also according to Gladkov, a woman was injured in the head and was hospitalized “in condition considered moderately serious”. Another woman suffered burns but she refused to be treated in hospital.

On Friday, the governor added that an elderly woman also had to be hospitalized due to a hypertension crisis and is under medical observation.

“Accidentally Discharged Combat Ammunition”

Tass news agency quoted Russia’s Defense Ministry as saying a Su-34 supersonic fighter-bomber “accidentally discharged ammunition”. The accident allegedly occurred around 10:15 pm (local time), “An accidental discharge of aviation ammunition occurred while a Sukhoi Su-34 aircraft of the air force was flying over the city of Belgorod”, reads the text . It was not known what type of weapon was involved.

The ministry announced that an investigation was already underway, according to Tass.

The Belgorod region is one of several parts of southern Russia where targets such as fuel and ammunition depots have been rocked by explosions since war broke out in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
