Blood, that lifeblood that runs through all of us, has often been used in cinema – most often in the horror and fantasy genres – to represent the audience’s mind. Some of the scenes are still in our memories.
For example, the ancient generations were greatly impressed by Cecil B. One of the powerful scenes in DeMille’s 10 Commandments, when Moses (Charlton Heston) appears before Ramses II (Yul Brynner) at the festival of Khnum and changes the water. Nile in the river of blood.
Another recent example, from the 90s, is in the intro to Stephen Norrington’s Blade. We see a young man going to a secret rave party in the backyard of a cold room.
The party rages until a drop of blood falls on him, before the valves are fully opened and the dance floor is transformed into a veritable giant shower of hemoglobin. Our poor wretch then realizes that he is at a vampire party. Fortunately, Blade steps in to get him out of this mess.
A final example, even more recent, is director Andy Muschietti’s new 2018 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, when young Beverly hears voices that seem to be coming from her bathroom sink. She approaches to try to examine the pipe, and then it’s a veritable fountain of blood that gushes out and covers every wall in the room, causing the poor young girl to completely panic.
