Matthew Rhys reveals his terrifying audition for ‘James Bond’ in ‘Casino Royale’: “I told you the new 007 could be lame and with a patch”

The audition came after the departure of Pierce Brosnan from the British franchise. At the time, Daniel Craig was just one name on a long list of possibilities.

The role of ‘James Bond’ could be considered one of the most sought-after in contemporary cinema. Passing the baton from 007 is a practically Olympic act, due to the responsibility that it entails. At least, that’s what the creators of the franchise believe, Barbara Broccoli and her family, who have owned the rights to the saga since 1962.

In the complex audition process, many actors fall by the wayside. With the current vacancy in the Bond role, the subject of film casting has come up repeatedly, with numerous actors confessing to having applied for it or, as in the case at hand, revealing their ordeals in front of the Broccolis.

Matthew Rhysan actor we have met in series such as ‘The Americans’ or ‘Perry Mason’, recently spoke with The Times and recounted his terrifying test to embody James Bond.

The audition came after the departure of Pierce Brosnan from the British franchise. At the time, Daniel Craig was just one name on a long list of possibilities. Just like Rhys. Matthew went to the company’s headquarters to read what would be the next Bond film, which would be released in 2006 (‘Casino Royale’).

I remember it was a very intimidating office. They just told us to put on a dark suit and read ‘Casino Royale’,Rhys commented.

This “terrifying” moment (as described by the interpreter) continued as follows: “They said, ‘What would you change about Bond?’ And I remember answering, ‘Oh.’ I was not expecting that question. Then I thought, ‘is it a trick question? Do you want people to say, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing. It is perfect’?”

As he acknowledges, His natural response would have been related to modifying the misogynistic content that could be seen in the previous tapes. Mainly, everything related to demeaning humor. However, what arose from within him at that moment was certainly different.

“‘Maybe I’d give him a limp,’ I told them. ‘Lame?’ Unanswered. ‘A patch?’ Unanswered.” Apparently, joking about the matter was not his best asset to get the role. Later, as we know, the role would fall to Craig, who would star in a total of five tapes of the franchise.

Recently, the casting director of the films, Debbie McWilliams, shared the difficult process involved in choosing a new Bond. And, furthermore, it recounted the difficulties that Craig himself had faced when he got the character. Although to this day he has become one of the 007 most loved by the public, after his appointment (and before seeing him in action) came a whole chain of insults and contempt.

The silhouette of the secret agent still does not have a new face. Who will be the lucky one to bring him to life in the following releases of the saga?
