In 1964, women are asked to be seductive, fabulous and fertile, but no one asks them to be funny. Barbara Parker is different. A young woman who works in a barley sugar factory in Blackpool decides to go to London without a definite plan, but with a dream.
She decides to reinvent herself and establish herself in the then male-dominated world of sitcoms. But the path to fame is strewn with pitfalls, and he faces many setbacks before reaching his goal.
This is the initial synopsis of Funny Woman, which Series Mania introduced to festival goers this year. A small British nugget that adapts the novel to the screen Funny girl by Nick Hornby (and no, it’s not a Broadway play). A kind of successor to the fabulous Mrs. Maisel, because there we also follow a young woman who stands out from the rest of society.
Barbara refuses to be objectified or relegated to the role of housewife. All he wants is to laugh and make others laugh. It’s Gemma Arterton and her peroxide hair slipping into a heroine-esque outfit. And the actor is brilliant at it.
We enjoy following the wanderings and triumphs of this character. But what we love most about him is his Lancashire accent, which is perfect for comedy.
Add to that some pretty cool 60s music that will make you want to dance in your living room and you have a series that will make you smile.
The series airs on OCS Max on April 25 at 9:00 PM.
