The global mobilization highlights the need for conscious consumption
Accelerate solutions to fight climate change and enable governments, citizens and businesses to do their part. This is the main proposal for Earth Day 2023, also known as Earth Day, celebrated on April 22nd. Under the theme “Investing in our planet”, the mobilization draws attention to the need for conscious consumption.
According to Earthday.org, organizer of the environmental movement, Earth Day has more than 150,000 partners in 192 countries, developing positive action. Furthermore, attempts are made to find daring, creative and innovative solutions, especially in terms of consumption, since this practice has a direct impact on the pollution of the planet.
According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the clothing sector is one of the most polluting in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, as the production of clothing generates between 2% and 8% of the volume of emissions. Again in this context, the textile dyeing is the biggest polluter of water in the world.
The global program also shows that the average consumption of clothes per person is 60% higher than 15 years ago, as each garment lasts half as long as in the past. In addition, the equivalent of a truckload of clothes is discarded or burned every second.
In view of this, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underlines the need for urgent measures in the face of the global average temperature, which has risen by 1.1°C compared to pre-industrial levels. This increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
Such climate change is also reflected in the corporate world. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), these changes will make heat stress more common, leading many workers to various medical conditions. Therefore, a global loss of 2% of hours worked by 2030 due to illness is estimated.
For the founder and principal executive of the Latin American Institute of Quality (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, the call for conscious consumption is not new, but it has gained more strength in the face of the effects of climate change.
“Today the different groups linked to a company, including the majority of customers, are not only interested in the delivery of a product or service, but they turn their attention to the whole process, the measures taken and whether these are related to the pursuit of sustainability”, he concludes.
