Russell Crowe has opened up about not immediately agreeing to star in Ridley Scott’s historical action thriller Gladiator, which won him an Academy Award for Best Actor. The Hollywood actor shared his thoughts in an interview with Vanity Fair. Crowe clarified that he even wanted to run away from filming because he considered the script “garbage”.
I was confident in my acting ability. What I wasn’t sure about “Gladiator” was the atmosphere around me. Basically, it was a great concept, but the script was bullshit, creepy bullshit. And it had all the possible bad ideas,” the actor explained.
At the time, Crowe’s best option seemed to be “getting on a plane and not filming at all.” However, Scott convinced him to finish the role, and the script was repeatedly rewritten literally in the course of filming. According to Russell, the film included a scene in which gladiators drove chariots with advertisements for producers of olive oil and other products. This detail was drawn from real stories of successful gladiators who made money from advertising.
Of course, maybe it was. But modern viewers from such a picture will have a completely different impression. “What the hell is this?” they would ask. The atmosphere around was too heterogeneous,” Crowe complained.

Ridley Scott agreed to rewrite the script, and they rewrote most of it. Crowe was fine with about 21 pages from the opening episodes. The script was about 110 pages long. I had to redo it literally on the go. The film was released in 2000 and grossed $460.5 million at the box office.
More than 20 years after the release of the original film, it has been revealed that a sequel is being prepared for production. However, Crow himself will not be in the new tape. His character dies at the end of the first film dies. Gladiator 2 will be released in November 2024. It is known that Denzel Washington and Barry Keoghan are busy in the project, and Paul Mescal will play the main role. Ridley Scott is back in the director’s chair.
Recall that last month a tragic event occurred in the family of Russell Crowe. Actor’s puppy Louie died in a tragic accident at just 16 months old. Crowe shared the sad news on social media along with a photo of the pet in black and white.
