The Lord of the Rings: The Amazon Series Accused of Plagiarism

It’s definitely a tough time for The Lord of the Rings series… Even though a recent report told us that only 37% of Prime Video subscribers finished watching it and that the Animal Welfare Association condemned the death of a horse for the second season, here’s what The Rings of Power is in the news again, this time for a dark accusation of plagiarism.

The writer Demetrius Polykhroni is indeed demanding $250 million from the Amazon platform, which he accuses of misappropriating elements of his novel. The King’s Fellowship: The War of the Rings.

The manuscript of the book (presented as the first opus of the saga, which was supposed to include seven books) was refused publication in 2019 by the Tolkien Estate Association, which is responsible for the interests of the novelist’s work. JRR Tolkien. So, through self-publishing, the author published his book in September 2022…just days after the series began on Premier Video!

“My dear”

Eleanor Brandefia in The Rings of Power series

Demetrius Polychroni blames the Amazon series in particular for taking over one of his characters; Eleanor. However, in the novel the latter is presented as the daughter of Sam Gammeg, and in Rings of Power this character belongs to the Pyvelus, a race believed to be the ancestors of the hobbits.

Note that Elanor is a character created by Tolkien over which Demetrius Polychronus cannot claim ownership. The Prime Video platform should not be bothered by these allegations, which do not appear to be based on any concrete evidence. Especially since these two works do not take place at the same time and follow two completely different stories.

To make matters worse, Demetrius Polychronos could be accused of publishing a book featuring characters he doesn’t own the rights to…unlike Amazon’s series, which has the rights to adapt the trilogy’s appendices. Lord of the Rings!

The immediate effect of this charge, the novel The King’s Fellowship: The War of the Rings No longer for sale on Amazon. It is also possible that accusations of plagiarism will be directed against Demetrius Polychronus, and none of the six other novels of his saga will see the light of day.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now available on Prime Video.
