‘I never should have done it’: If Spielberg has one regret, this is it!

The great Steven Spielberg has once again spoken about the changes he instituted in his film ET the Extraterrestrial, but this time expanding on its subject matter. If he has already expressed his regrets about the changes made to his film, today he expresses his thoughts on the recent trend of retouching works after their release.

During the last master class he gave timeThe director recalled the tweaks he wanted to ET in 2002 for the film’s 20th anniversary:

“ET was the movie where I realized that the feds were approaching children with guns, and I thought about replacing the guns with walkie-talkies… As the years went by, I changed my mind.”

If he comes back, it’s because he thinks he made a mistake:

It was a mistake. I should never have done that. ET is a product of its time. Neither film should be viewed in today’s context, willingly or under duress.

“I should never have damaged the archive of my work”Steven Spielberg notes today“And I don’t advise anyone to do that. All of our movies are a testament to who we were when we made them, what the world was like, and what the world was receiving when we released those stories. So I’m really sorry.”

To remind you, ET tells the story of the friendship between a young boy, Elliot, and an alien who one day lands on Earth and tries to return home to the stars. Obviously, the authorities will be very closely interested in this creature from another world. The film was recently released in a 4K anniversary version for the film’s 40th anniversary.
