James Mangold has revealed how long the scene in which we see Harrison Ford 40 years younger will last. And the duration is not exactly short…
‘Indiana Jones 5’ has all the ingredients to become one of the best movies of 2023. Not only for reviving one of the most epic sagas in the history of cinema, but also for the detailed work behind the film. A few months ago, the news broke that Harrison Ford would drastically rejuvenate for the opening sequence of the film. However, detailed information on the matter remained unknown.
Now, the film’s director, James Mangold, has spoken about this process of de-aging to which the actor was subjected, and about the impressive results of the technology used. Is it possible to travel back in time? Apparently yes.
25 minutes. That is the duration of the scene that will see Harrison Ford back in his skin from ‘Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark’. To give us a visual idea, the film was released in 1981. 42 years later, the actor has reviewed his face from back then. (And he has done it masterfully, as Mangold acknowledges.)
The director has described Ford as “talented and agile“when recreating their”35 years old to record the scenes“. “Besides, the technology used is on another level,Mangold continued exposing, in his last interview with total films. “We had hundreds of hours of footage from him.he: close-ups, medium shots, general shots, all kinds of lighting, day and night… He could record Harrison, on a Monday, as a 79-year-old man playing a 35-year-old, and by Wednesday his face had already been replaced.“
“It hasn’t been a year of effort just to get to the first pass,” he stated. “It’s amazing technology and somehow I didn’t really want to think about it. I just focused on shooting what is 25 minutes of initial extravagance. It was my chance to let myself go.”
“The goal is for the audience to fully feel what they miss. Because when the movie gets to 1969, they are going to have to adapt to what is there now, which is different from what was in their day,Mangold concluded.
Ford himself, who spoke a few months ago about this technological process, admitted how curious it was to see himself with this edition superimposed on his face. “I don’t know how they do it. But it’s my real face. They put a few dots on my face, I say the lines and they get to do it. It’s fantastic.“
The latest release of ‘Indiana Jones’ will hit theaters on June 30. It will be the last occasion in which the actor will get into the skin of the legendary treasure hunteras he himself has recently admitted.
