Misanthrope: What is this seven-style thriller with Shailene Woodley?

Misanthrope is the first English-language film by Damian Schifron, the Argentinian director to whom we owe Les Nouveaux Sauvages. The filmmaker returned behind the camera after 8 years with this work, which caused a sensation in 2015, nominated for an Oscar for the best foreign language film.

The story of the misanthrope follows Eleanor, played by Shailene Woodley. He is a young detective with a troubled past at the scene of a horrific mass crime.

The police and the FBI begin an unprecedented hunt, but in the face of the killer’s ever-unpredictable modus operandi, the investigation stalls.

Eleanor, meanwhile, finds herself more and more involved in the case and realizes that her own inner demons can help her understand the soul of this unique killer…

For this first work in the United States, Damian Schiffron is surrounded by a very good cast consisting of Shailene Woodley, Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo and Ralph Ineson.

Filmed primarily in Montreal, Canada, Misanthrope oscillates between the gloomy and tacky atmosphere of Seven and the cold austerity of Zodiac, as evidenced by the trailer images. Written by Jonathan Wakeham, the film rests on the shoulders of 31-year-old Shailene Woodley, who appeared in the Divergent saga.

The young woman brings to mind the character of Clarice Starling, the heroine of Silence of the Lambs, played by Jodie Foster. Meticulous and obsessive, he tracks down the killer, never giving up.

Note that in the original version, the misanthrope is titled “To Catch a Murderer.” It is the same VO title as The Illinois Murderer, a forensic biopic centered on serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

A handsome neighbor, a child in a clown mask, a successful businessman and a serial killer who raped and killed more than 30 young boys.

Misanthrope hits the big screen on April 26.
