“It seems like I only exist in ‘The Flash’ as an obstacle or a problem. In ‘Man of Steel’ I was more a part of the story.”
Michael Shannon has recently revealed that his decision to participate in ‘The Flash’, reprising his role as the evil General Zod, was not a “resounding yes.” In fact, a famous director he had collaborated with in the past made him wonder whether he would return to the DC Worlds or not.
If you are a fan of the saga you can imagine where the shots go. This is Zack Snyder, filmmaker responsible for other franchise titles such as ‘The Man of Steel’, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ or ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’.
Shannon was talking to him. podcast bingeworthy and recognized that His reluctance was due to Snyder’s bad departure from the Universe created by Warner Bros. During the post-production of the last one mentioned, Snyder had to drop out of the process due to a family tragedy. Joss Whedon took over and was in charge of modifying the tone of the film.
“I hesitated to go back because I was not very happy with what happened to Zack Snyder and with this whole thing,Shannon commented.I really love Zack. The fact that he asked me to do this role, in the beginning, was probably the biggest surprise of my career. It almost seemed like a joke to me. It was like, ‘You’re kidding me, right?'”
“I spoke to the director of ‘The Flash,’ Andy Muschetti, about it. I liked Andy and I said: ‘Look, I want to have Zack’s blessing for this, because it wouldn’t feel right to do it without it,” continued the interpreter. “And Zack was very understanding. He gave me his blessing and so I was able to do it.”
In addition to Snyder’s approval, the actor also acknowledged having established a very positive relationship with the director of ‘The Flash’, which made it easier for him to resume his role in the franchise.
“I love Andy too. I really liked working with him. They are two super creative guys. Andy is a wonderful artist. He wouldn’t stop drawing pictures when I sat down to talk to him. He’d look at him and say, ‘Hey, can I keep it?’ And he would answer me: ‘Of course!’ She would sign it and give it to me.”
Shannon also commented in a recent interview with Looper, that his return to the skin of General Zod had been surprising to him, since the character dies at the end of ‘The Man of Steel’. However, ‘The Flash’ opens the plots of the multiverse, so his appearance is justified.
“It’s quite different, this kind of multiverse situation,” Shannon commented in the initial podcast. “It seems that I only exist in ‘The Flash’ as an obstacle or a problem. In ‘Man of Steel’ he was more of a part of the story. ‘The Flash’ is definitely about Flash (as it should be). So I don’t have that much depth.”
