The subject of artificial intelligence is taking more and more space at all levels and is beginning to interfere with cinema. They asked about this topic during the interview ColliderJoe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Endgame, shared his critical analysis of just how capable this technology is.
“I’m on the board of several AI companies. I speak from my own experience, in this sense, and I can tell you that AI is designed precisely to protect you from AI. And unfortunately, we’re in a similar world and we’re going to need AIs in our lives, because whether we’re comfortable with their development or not, we’re going to fall into that future. The question is how to protect ourselves in this future?“
But there’s clearly a way for Joe Russo to take advantage of this technology as it evolves. To the point of perhaps allowing direct viewer-generated films in the long run!
“You can use AI to change the storyIt continues in the collider. In a game, movie or TV series, the story is constantly evolving. With AI, you can go home and save the AI on your streaming platform. And if you’re thinking, “I want to watch a movie where I see my avatar with Marilyn Monroe. I want it to be romantic because it’s been a rough day,” and that makes a character that mimics the voice very effective. And now you have a romantic comedy with yourself that lasts 90 minutes. You can personalize your story to whoever you want…”
Joe Russo’s comments come after a French film festival recently awarded a film created in part by artificial intelligence. This is a short film awarded at Nikon Film Festival 2023 held on April 21.
The jury awarded the production of a short film, directed by Anna Apter, /Imagine. in the columns of FigaroThe president of the jury, Alexander Astie, commented on this choice: “/Imagine has generated a lot of discussion. That was already a good sign: there are plenty of movies we don’t want to talk about! And this one at least created something pretty unique. OK: The movie was made with artificial intelligence, but I don’t think it’s an “AI directed” movie. Artificial intelligence is accompanied by text intelligence, which is of human origin. And this is the most successful in the film. Thus, it is one of the coolest representations of the limits of human creativity and artificial intelligence..”
However, this interview with Alexandre Astier differs from Joe Russo’s comments. The director of Kaamelott does not think that artificial intelligence can match the creative work of others. “I’ve tried Midjourney, ChatGPT… Midjourney is definitely a problem because it rips and mixes the styles of recognized artists. On the other hand, it can be used as a mood board, a mood board. That’s what I’m doing here. I imagine a decor composed of concrete things: artificial intelligence makes a first draft that needs to be reworked, corrected. It helps me think.
But that’s not what I present to my team – even when the kit in question is very sophisticated. It would scare the creativity out of the people I work with, and I certainly don’t want to stop the art direction from working. Ditto for ChatGPT, which can mimic the style of Anglo-Saxon authors such as Joseph Campbell. I redid two or three scenes this way to see it. Works well. But any script consultant can do it too. There is definitely a place for AI to become our travel buddies or our assistants. In the end, though, it’s not the AI that gets in the way, it’s the human.”
Undoubtedly, the debate about the appropriate use of these new technologies must continue!
