Stone Temple Pilots bassist once again cited bossa nova as inspiration for “Interstate Love Song”

Stone Temple Pilots cited bossa nova as the source of inspiration for “Interstate Love Song,” the band’s biggest hit. The group comes to Brazil to perform at the festival summer breezein São Paulo, and bassist Robert DeLeo gave an interview to G1.

“I learned to love bossa nova and Brazilian music since I was little, from my mother who played stuff from the 1960s and early 1970s. Antonio Carlos Jobimmainly,” he stated. “Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto. These are the songs that, from an early age, were very close to my heart.”

The musician mentioned his passion for Brazilian music and jazz and admitted that it is not easy to reproduce the harmonies and melodies of the genre: “I just finished a solo album that I released and I’m working on the next one. I have a bossa nova song on the next one.” Among other inspirations, DeLeo mentioned Rosa Passos and stated that he would love to watch her play.

It is not the first time that Robert talks about the importance of Brazilian music in the band’s work. “‘Interstate Love Song’ is it grunge? I don’t think so. I actually wrote it as a bossa nova song; that’s how it started,” he revealed in an interview with American radio station 107.7 The Bone.
