Toyota surpasses production goal of 9.1 million vehicles and warns of chip shortage

Toyota set a global annual production record in the fiscal year ending in March, surpassing its goal of 9.1 million vehicles. But the world’s largest automaker by sales has warned it continues to see the impacts of the long-standing global shortage of electronic components, citing it is still difficult to predict future effects.

Toyota said Thursday it produced 9.13 million vehicles in the 12 months to March 31, a fraction ahead of estimates, though the target was cut twice from an initial average for the year of about 9, 7 million. In the previous year, vehicle production was 8.57 million.

Global sales in the 12 months ending in March rose to 9.61 million vehicles from 9.51 million a year earlier, setting another year’s record for the company.

Toyota has not disclosed new sales or production targets for the current fiscal year, which began in April.

The company revealed that it has so far sold 17,473 electric vehicles worldwide in the first three months of 2023, up from 24,466 in full year 2022.
