The explosive end of ‘The diplomat’, explained: the future of the Netflix series is more than open

Netflix, we’re going to need a second season. Please and thank you.

Spoilers for Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat’ below.

In the latest political thriller released among Netflix series, ‘The Diplomat’, US ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) arrives in London after a British aircraft carrier explodes off the coast of Iran.

As he adjusts to his new role, try to find out who ordered the attack on HMS Courageous and try to prevent a global war from breaking out. Kate also has to deal with her husband, fellow diplomat Hal (Rufus Sewell), for whom she struggles to take a back seat while his wife shines. The closing moments of the twisted season finale gave us another blast, leaving viewers in such suspense that we practically have to beg Netflix to renew the series for another season.

So who was behind this, who died, and what does this mean for the future of ‘The Diplomat’?

The end of ‘The diplomat’, explained

In the final episode of ‘The Diplomat’, Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) is furious that Kate has been unable to persuade the President of the United States to attack Lenkov troops in response to the Lenkov group’s alleged involvement in the bombardment of HMS Courageous. Instead, British special forces intend to arrest Roman Lenkov in France, where he will meet his secret family.

When Trowbridge suddenly comes out in favor of this new plan, Kate and British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) fly to Paris to ask French Interior Minister Brielle Fournier (Micky Sébastian) for permission to arrest Lenkov on French soil. Meanwhile, Kate’s personal problems escalate when she invites Hal to accompany her to Paris, but he declines, choosing instead to give a speech at Chatham House as her wife.

Hal’s speech an obvious ploy to secure the soon-to-be-vacant Secretary of State postis a success, and Conservative Party MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler) requests a meeting with him.

Back in Paris, Fournier finally gives Kate permission to send the special forces to arrest Lenkov. However, during their meeting with him at a ball at the Louvre, he drops a bombshell: Fournier tells Kate that he knows in good hand that Trowbridge does not plan to arrest Lenkov, but to assassinate him.

Kate leaves the event and confronts Austin, whom she suspects was complicit in the plan. However, he is just as surprised as she is. Austin claims that killing Lenkov would give Trowbridge and the British government bad publicity, that it makes no sense, and that the only people who would want Lenkov dead are those who hired him. And this is when they fall off the donkey: Trowbridge hired Lenkov to bomb HMS Courageous because he wants to start a war. Scotland and Northern Ireland are pushing for independence, and showing he can unite the country in a time of darkness would improve Trowbridge’s chances of being re-elected Prime Minister.

As Kate and Austin solve the puzzle, Hal is already on his way to meet Grove. What he doesn’t know is that Kate’s subordinate Stuart (Ato Essandoh) and his assistant Ronnie (Jess Chanliau) have already arrived at the meeting location at Kate’s request. Grove is irritated by this unexpected arrival and runs out of the restaurant to his car. Ronnie and Stuart give chase, and Hal arrives. But, just as Grove opens the door, with Hal, Stuart and Ronnie close by, the vehicle explodes..

Later we see the French police inform Kate of what has happened, but we don’t hear exactly what you’re being told. Immediately the credits roll and we are left with a million questions to answer.

How ‘The Diplomat’ leaves the ground prepared for season 2

First of all, we would obviously expect a second season of ‘The Diplomat’ to address whether Hal, Stuart, Grove and Ronnie survived the explosion or were only injured. Probably We’d bet Ronnie and Grove would be killed due to their proximity to the car (sorry ya), but the fate of Hal and Stuart is a bit more uncertain..

Sewell has hinted that his character will survive because there is so much more to explore with Hal and Kate, whose relationship is a major element in the series. When asked about the fate of the couple at the event TudumSewell said: “All I know is, if you figure it out one way or the other too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think that there are enough problems to keep us going. [unas cuantas temporadas]. Who knows?”.

And who ordered the attack on Grove? It is possible that the MP had inside information about Trowbridge’s role in the attack on HMS Courageous and intended to share it with Hal. After all, Grove made it very clear that he wanted to meet with Hal, and only Hal. If Trowbridge found out about the meeting and Grove’s plans, it stands to reason that he would order an attack on the MP to prevent the information from getting out.

Meanwhile, Kate and Austin will probably build a case against Trowbridge (especially if he’s the reason Hal is dead or in the hospital), and the White House’s efforts to make Kate vice president will surely continue.

Either way, a cliffhanger like that surely bodes well for the future of ‘The Diplomat’. Netflix has a bad record canceling series, but given the popularity of ‘The Diplomat’ (it has already dethroned ‘The Night Agent’ from its former number one spot in Netflix’s global top 10) and the suspenseful grandeur of its finale (meaning another season would surely bring plenty of views), it seems like the best thing for the platform. is to renew the series.
