Unexpected Yaga
We used to think of the evil witch from the Hut on Chicken Legs as the main villain of Russian fairy tales, who can not only confuse all the cards for the next Ivan the Fool or deceive the gullible Red Maiden, but also taste human meat (after all, it’s not for nothing that she is called “Bone foot”).
But it was decided not to show this dark essence in the film “Yaga and the Book of Spells”. The local Yaga is not a sorceress, but she is still learning, and she doesn’t want to cause much harm to anyone. Young Jadwiga is rather offended by the whole world because of the long-standing betrayal of her closest friend, and therefore treats all people with suspicion. But everything changes when Princess Sineglazka knocks on her door.
Many magical heroes
In the space of Russian folklore, one can find an inexhaustible number of heroes and sources of inspiration, which the project director Vladimir Sakov skillfully uses. Together with the young Yaga, the scientist cat Kotofey lives in the Hut, and during the adventures the main characters meet such characters as Vodyanoy, Goblin and Sivka-Burka. There are also new characters in this tale: for example, grumpy brownies, Cones, helping (and sometimes hindering) Yaga her. And also – the evil sorceress Belladonna and Princess Sineglazka.

A new plot for an old fairy tale
The creators of “Yaga and the Book of Spells” not only present the audience with a new version of the well-known sorceress, but also add details to her “early biography”. According to the plot of the cartoon, even in childhood, her closest friend stole a book of spells from little Jadwiga. Years later, this offender turned into the evil sorceress Belladonna, who dreams of ruling the kingdom of Far Far Away. The fate of the true king of the magical world and his daughter Blue Eyes is under threat. And then Yaga unexpectedly comes to the aid of the princess.

Hollywood screenwriter and member of the Quartet I
Producer and author of the idea Alexander Chistyakov, director and screenwriter Vadim Sveshnikov and actor and member of the famous Quartet I Leonid Barats worked on the creation of the story about the young sorceress Yaga. And also – Hollywood screenwriter Gregory Poirier, who developed the ideas of famous American franchises. For example, Poirier worked on the script for the action movie with Nicolas Cage “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, and also wrote the script for the animation project “The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride”
Famous heroes behind the scenes
Many fairy-tale heroes of “Yaga and the Book of Spells” are well known to young viewers, but the actors who voice them behind the scenes are no less famous. So, the sorceress Yaga was played by the star of the film “Ice 2” and the TV series “Call Center” Yulia Khlynina. The voice actor Diomid Vinogradov became a real man-orchestra of the project. In the cartoon, he is responsible for the voices of several heroes at once: Kotofey, Sivka-Burka, Vodyany and Shishek.

Fyodor Bondarchuk as Leshy
You can not immediately guess who is responsible for the role of the grumpy Leshy on the project. And at the same time, it is this hero who is voiced by the actor and director Fyodor Bondarchuk, who calls his hero “a temperamental character … an ambiguous character, but very interesting for dubbing.” By the way, this is far from the first such experience for Bondarchuk: in the past, he twice voiced the main character in the animated dilogy “Boss Baby”, and also participated in the voicing of Maxim Fadeev’s project “Sawa. Warrior’s Heart.

The Chistyakov sisters in action
The family of singer Natalia Chistyakova-Ionova (aka Glukoza) also contributed to the work on the film. Moreover, it was not Natalia herself who took part in voicing the project, but her daughters. Young Yadviga in the cartoon spoke in the voice of little Vera Chistyakova-Ionova, and the eldest daughter of the singer, 15-year-old Lidia Chistyakova-Ionova (she is also a singer ray!), became Princess Sineglazka. In the past, the girl has also found herself in the sound booth: in the animated film “Savva. Heart of a Warrior ”she played the role of the Sorceress.

A potential hit from ray! on the soundtrack
Singer Ray! also recorded a single for the project “Yaga and the Book of Spells” called “Mistake of Nature”. An optimistic track about unfading vitality and craving for adventure could become the motto of the screen princess Sineglazka. Also, the song will find its place in the first solo album of Lydia, who performs on stage under the pseudonym ray!. The track list of the LP called “Something Has Changed” (the record was released on April 7) includes 10 tracks.

Music
Another well-known musician, Igor Vdovin, had a hand in creating music on “Yaga and the Book of Spells”. In the past, a member of the Leningrad group, and now the creator of soundtracks for such projects as Psycho, Actresses and Black Spring, and in the project of Vladimir Sakov, Vdovin experiments with folk song motifs and creates an original soundtrack for a children’s fairy tale.
Elena Shulman
The project “Yaga and the Book of Spells”, unfortunately, will be one of the last where you can hear the voice of voice actress Elena Shulman. It was Elena who at one time voiced the character beloved by the public from the cartoon “Finding Nemo” – the forgetful fish Dory. She also became the Russian voice for the heroines of Lindsay Lohan and Catherine Zeta Jones in various films. In the film “Yaga and the Book of Spells,” she voiced the role of the evil sorceress Belladonna.
