The final journey of Guardians of the Galaxy hits our screens on Wednesday, May 3. Volume 3 of the saga founded by James Gunn reunites the most unlikely team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last time.
Although he managed to complete his trilogy, as we know, James Gunn was almost completely absent. As our colleagues at AdoroCinema report, Chris Pratt tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview how he and Zoe Saldana did everything to get the director back in control of the project.
In 2018, Chris Pratt and the rest of the cast were really desperate when James Gunn was fired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after controversial tweets from a decade ago resurfaced. Back on the subject, Chris Pratt then said he took the initiative to write an open letter to Disney asking for his reinstatement as director. Especially when he discovered that James Gunn’s screenplay was always being used, he realized that there was a good chance that the director would return. Apparently it was Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, who did everything behind the scenes to keep the script alive and then handed it off to the actors who stepped up.
“I said, oh, so we can use the screenplay that James Gunn wrote, but we can’t have him as the director? Chris Pratt said. “It’s so good in the script that you say, ‘Yeah, we’ve got to get rid of him because we couldn’t partner with this man.’ But we will adapt his script.’“
Additionally, Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana both went to Marvel headquarters to meet in person with Kevin Feige, as well as his co-president Louis D’Esposito, as well as head of production Victoria Alonso. Dave Bautista, for his part, took a less subtle but equally committed route, criticizing Disney on Twitter, then wrote:It pains you to work with someone who would allow a smear campaign by fascists.”, referring to those who brought up James Gunn’s old tweets.
“Dave and Chris are very different in their approachesJames Gunn said. “Chris was like, “How can we do this methodically and take it step by step?” And Dave’s like, ‘You’re crazy.’“
However, the actors did their best to help the director who created the Guardians on the screen and who gave them the opportunity.
“He was someone who took risks with us, and it made sense for us to have his back when he needed it most.Zoe Saldana explained.
Change direction
It took a simple change of heart from Disney chairman Alan Horne, who had a growing sense that he had made the wrong choice, to bring James Gunn back. The night Alan Horn re-offered him the job, James Gunn then went to Kevin Feige, who was delighted that his efforts had helped turn things around. But James Gunn had a confession to make: Just a day before his reinstatement, he quietly vowed to direct a second movie, The Suicide Squad, to rival DC. This meant that James Gunn would not be returning to Guardians of the Galaxy right away. Feig’s answer? “Just make a good movie.“
mission successful According to the first reviews of Volume 3, it would be: they really appreciate the project of the now co-CEO of DC, who seems to have completed the beloved trilogy perfectly. Whether or not this is true remains to be seen. The wait will be over in a few days: Guardians of the Galaxy 3 It will be released in theaters on May 3, 2023.
In the meantime, you can find the first two episodes — as well as the Christmas episode released last November — streaming on Disney+.
