If you enjoyed the light-hearted Mark Wahlberg of The Apprentice Parents, a feature film airing this Sunday evening on TF1, then I recommend another comedy from the American actor. Available on Netflix, it is, I must specify, of a much more trashy nature: it is about Ted, who sees that a Hollywood star responds to … a teddy bear!
The 2012 comedy Teddy, directed by Seth MacFarlane (creator of The Griffins), tells the story of an 8-year-old boy who wants his Christmas bear to come to life and become his best friend for life. His wish comes true, but almost 30 years later, the story doesn’t really feel like a Christmas story anymore.
Teddy’s omnipresence with the now-adult John (played by Mark Wahlberg) greatly strains his romantic relationship with Lori. Although patient, the latter sees this exclusive friendship, which consists mostly of drinking beer and smoking weed in front of TV shows, each more old-fashioned than the other, a flaw of John’s that limits him in childhood, preventing them from succeeding professionally. And from really investing in their couple.
A very original, feature film Ted is a real success. It’s funny, it’s delusional, it’s schoolboy, it’s trashy, it’s cynical, it’s cheeky and there’s no doubt that this adult comedy will put a big smile on your face.
“We didn’t want a movie with actors on one side and animated characters on the other. We wanted a movie populated by individuals, one of whom is a teddy bear.”, says director Seth MacFarlane, who also voices the animal in VO (in VF? It’s JoeyStarr!). If the technique used is similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? By Robert Zemeckis, the spirit of this work is closer to Jim Henson’s “Muppets’ Big Adventure” than others.
Seth MacFarlane had to learn 3D computer graphics techniques. To portray Teddy, he used motion capture in a Moven suit, which he wore in front of the actors from the frames. Likewise, he constantly wore a microphone to record his voice, so that he could record dialogue simultaneously with the actors’ lines, giving the impression of immediacy. Great performance for an amazing comedy that you will quickly discover on Netflix!
