In the shadow of ‘Succession’, ‘Love & Death’ and ‘Barry’, HBO Max has released the new series from the creator of ‘Lost’… And it’s crazy.
HBO Max has released the first four episodes of ‘Mrs. Davis’, just in time for you to do a marathon on the May bank holiday and complete it with the broadcast of the fifth chapter on Tuesday the 2nd, one day after you have caught up with seasons 4 of ‘Succession’ and ‘Barry ‘. In this text you will find some other spoilers of these early episodes of ‘Mrs. Davis’so… You have been warned.
‘Mrs. Davis’ is a bonkers from ‘Lost’ creator Damon Lindelof and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ screenwriter Tara Hernandeza wild and crazy science fiction, action and comedy series in which a nun, Sister Simone (Betty Gilpin) is up against a powerful Artificial Intelligence named Mrs. Davis (no, it’s not ChatGPT. At least for now) that dominates the world under an algorithm based on rewards (the “wings”) for doing good deeds. Simone will join the resistance, a group of rebels who, like her, do not quite believe in the good intentions of the AI, and they will all fight for a single objective: to seize the Holy Grail.
What’s with the Holy Grail? Why would an AI want a religious item? Oh ok, is that God exists. And Jesus Christ. and he is black. But, before going into details, let’s put ourselves in context. And it is that the series, a firm candidate for the best action series, deserves it.
At first, coming from who it comes from and with the synopsis it has, we think that we are going to find ourselves with a philosophical drama full of unresolved enigmas. And a bit yes, but this has nothing to do with ‘The Leftovers’ or ‘Watchmen’, Lindelof’s previous series on organizations and sects that are gaining followers around the world. ‘Mrs. Davis’ is much more like ‘Preacher,’ the Amazon Prime Video series based on the Garth Ennis comics. Ennis, in case it doesn’t ring a bell, is also the creator of ‘The Boys’, so you can already imagine a bit where the shots are going.
‘Preacher’ introduced us to a preacher in search of God, who has taken a vacation. Along the way, he met vampires, vengeful spirits from hell, and angels who are actually assassins for hire, as well as a Catholic organization that controls the Vatican and tries to hide the existence of the direct descendant of Jesus Christ, which because of centuries of inbreeding … Well, you’ve already seen what happens in monarchies. Dismemberments, vomiting, orgies… ‘Preacher’ is everything one could expect from a Garth Ennis series, and ‘Mrs. Davis’ has not yet reached those extremes, but seems to be on the same path.
‘Mrs. Davis’ begins with a sword fight in which some Templar nuns behead a good handful of Inquisition soldiers to protect the Holy Grail.. Not a bad start. From there we jump to the present, year 2023, where we see how Mrs. Davis controls the world fulfilling the wishes of the people, eliminating (supposedly) hunger and wars in the world and keeping everyone happy. But You can trust an AI just as much as a motivational coach. There is no full happiness and whoever promises it to you is not trustworthy. That’s what Simone thinks, the leading nun who is suspicious of Mrs. Davis and blames her for the death of her father (David Arquette!).
Simone strikes a deal with the AI. If she hands over the Holy Grail to her, she will be logged out forever. To achieve this, she will have the help of her husband, and… Who are the nuns married to? Exact. Simone is married to Jesus Christ, and when he prays he teleports to a restaurant where the Messiah cooks him some delicious falafels (so says the RAE that is written). Because, he admits it’s true, the normal thing is that Jesus physically resembles more the waiter of the Kebab on the corner of your house than Conchita Wurst. So yes, Jesus is black. Oh, and he fucks too. Because that’s what people in holy matrimony do (although hers is an open relationship with all the nuns in the world, of course. It’s a little complicated being married to Jesus. She has her pros and cons).
In her search for the Grail, Simone will mix with nazisclandestine organizations led by cowboys in a crisis of masculinityhis ex-illusionist mother and an international ecclesiastical network that also goes in search of the relic and for it have replaced the very Pope of Rome with a doppleganger. And all this in four episodes.
What will the next episodes of ‘Mrs Davis’ bring us on HBO Max? stay tuned.
