Prime Video: Why The Citadel Is The Russo Brothers’ Answer To James Bond

Released on Prime Video from April 28, The Citadel is not an exact copy of James Bond, far from it, and that is not the ambition of the creators of the series. Centered around a couple of amnesiac spies, The Citadel aims to be a new take on television in a universe spanning multiple series and seasons. Of course, the core of the universe revolves around the Citadel series, which has some interesting inspirations.

As long-time fans of James Bond, the Russo brothers could draw inspiration from him for the series. Although the series draws inspiration from James Bond – with plenty of tricks, a homemade version of Q and an even sharper voice – the Russo brothers argue that The Citadel is a new genre of espionage.

in the interview The whole movieAnthony Russo explains that they want to surprise the audience by not repeating everything that James Bond films offer:

We’re huge Bond fans, but it’s our job to try to take what we love about the genres and films that have influenced us and find ways to put them into spaces and places that surprise us. It’s not our job as storytellers to bring them to you. Another version of Bond. Our job as storytellers is to bring you new experiences that will surprise and amaze you. I hope we will reach it. You will see.

One of the main differences between James Bond and The Citadel is the entire New World industrial establishment—literally and figuratively. Although Citadel is all about TV, it will feature experimental storylines on a global scale, with spin-offs taking place in India, Spain, Mexico and Italy, even outside of the main series.

He is back in the series

Also, The Citadel is not the solo adventures of Mason Kane, played by Richard Madden. While James Bond focuses on the titular spy, The Citadel focuses on Kane and Nadia Sin, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. This is a serious game changer in the traditional portrayal of the spy thriller. The two characters are treated equally, without any gender distinction, including in the action scenes.

This is a genre where the main role is traditionally male“, explains Joe Russo. It was interesting for us to tease that out. Priyanka is very physically gifted. He’s badass on camera and rambling on the show. Without giving too much away, her character is the bulk of the series, while Richard’s character is just making up for lost time. It was a really interesting and exciting idea for us“.

It also brings an emotional dimension to the characters, who develop on a personal level – compared to the traumatic event they go through at the beginning of the series – but also as a duo and a couple, as their relationship is not just professional.

If from a purely artistic and creative point of view, The Citadel brings nothing new to the genre, the Russo brothers may have invented the first globalized spy series…

The first two episodes of The Citadel are currently available on Prime Video.
