“When I leave in 2026, you’ll have a university in the east side,” Lula says on May 1

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, mentioned on Monday 1 May his “exit” from the government in 2026, at the end of his third term. “We will start building the Federal University of the East Zone. I will start and finish this East Zone University in my term, and when I leave in 2026 you will have a University in the East Zone,” Lula said, during the May 1 demonstration organized by the trade union offices of São Paulo.

The president’s speech comes amid speculation about whether or not he will contest the 2026 presidential election.

It was Lula’s first event with the unions after his election. The organization of the event estimates that 40,000 people attend the act in Vale do Anhangabaú.

The joint act of 1 May is organized by the trade union bodies CUT, Força Sindical, CTB, UGT, Intersindical Working Class, CSB, Nova Central and Public.
