The end of the journey for the Guardians of the Galaxy is near. The release of the third and final installment of James Gunn’s Marvel trilogy as the feature film hits theaters on May 3rd.
The trailer released so far is more insistent on the emotions and possible deaths of certain characters than on their upcoming adversary (which appears to be Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, unless the latter is hiding another enemy). If the film can be more violent than the previous one, the American classification does not change.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is indeed rated PG-13 (not recommended for children under 13 and subject to parental consent). As well as the other two and all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe games. Except it has a small detail, censored in this excerpt, that could have tipped the balance towards the next section.
“Open that damn door!”, yells Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) to Nebula (Karen Gillan), who is clearly ignorant of Earth’s machines and how they work. which in English gives: “Open the damn door!” And this is the first time Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers will hear the word “damn” in one of his films.
And for good reason: its repeated existence could push the feature into an R category (not for children under 17), which some studios fear in terms of attracting the widest possible audience. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 managed to get away with it without abusing it.
“You can only have one in a PG-13 movie”James Gunn responded to a customer who asked if there would be others. “That being said, it wasn’t planned – I told Chris to add it on set and he made it so funny that we kept it.”
The filmmaker isn’t quite right when he says a PG-13 movie can only have one damn, because only Mars had two. But this is an exception to the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America) regulations that Marvel Studios has always followed. To date and this stretch to put an end to the taboo in the MCU.
surely No one knows. Because maybe Kevin Feige and his crew just wanted to embrace the rock side of James Gunn, who gave them two (and maybe three) magnum opus. Or wanted to see how far they could go in terms of censorship, since Deadpool 3 is coming out and it’s been announced that it will be rated R in the US.
If Guardians of the Galaxy 3 serves as a test for them on that front, no one can deny that if Deadpool is able to offend again, it will be thanks in part to Star-Lord’s swearing.
