After a slowdown, inflation is picking up again in Italy

After a slow start to the year, inflation has picked up again in Italy, according to preliminary data released this Tuesday (2) by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat).

The Consumer Price Index for the Community (NIC) increased in April by 0.5% compared to the previous month and by 8.3% compared to the same period last year.

In March, these indices were 0.4% and 7.6% respectively.

The acceleration is mainly due to the prices of unregulated energy goods, such as fuel, which rose by 26.7% in April on an annual basis, against 18.9% in the previous month.

Regulated energy goods, such as electricity and gas tariffs, a component hard hit by the war in Ukraine in 2022, instead recorded a deflation of 26.4%, against -20.3% in March. .
