The minister suggests that the Giro d’Italia 2024 starts in Ukraine

Antonio Tajani commented that the action would be a ‘sign of attention’

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, opened this Tuesday (2) the possibility of Ukraine hosting the opening of the next edition of the Giro d’Italia, one of the most traditional events in world cycling.

At the press conference, Tajani explained that the action could represent a “sign of attention” to the country, hit hard by the Russian invasion. “I would like the next edition of the Giro d’Italia to start in Ukraine, it would be a sign of attention towards a country that we strongly support. We consider sport an instrument of foreign policy. Our relationship with Ukraine is one of friendship, solidarity and closeness”, said the Italian deputy premier.

Domestically, Tajani said the popular cycling event is something of a tool for the country’s growth. The politician added that the athletes pass through many Italian cities, a factor that drives tourism in these places.

“It’s not only important because it’s a major sporting event, but also because it’s a way to experience Italy. Athletes visit suggestive places and small towns, all part of our cultural heritage,” said Tajani.

The 2023 edition of the Giro d’Italia will start on May 6 from the Costa dei Trabocchi in Fossacesia, in Abruzzo. The last stop will be in Rome. .
