Four Verdão players were in Ecuador in the last 16 of the Libertadores 2017. It was the only time this duel took place in the competition
Palmeiras is preparing for its first appointment of the month of May: the liberators. Verdão will face Barcelona-EQU, next Wednesday (3), away from home, at 21:30, in the group stage. This will be only the second time that Alviverde has faced the Ecuadorian team in Guayaquil for the continental competition. In the first and only, in 2017, for the round of 16 of the continental competition, some players from the current squad were present.
On 5 July 2017, Verdão were defeated by Barcelona-EQU 1-0: at the time, striker Dudu and defender Luan were in the starting lineup, while full-back Mayke and midfielder Raphael Veiga were on the bench. The team commanded by the then coach Cuca even overturned the advantage in the return match, at home, winning 1-0, but ended up greeting Libertadores on penalties.
Next Wednesday’s duel is very important for Palmeiras’ future in the Libertadores. Alviverde started with a defeat against Bolívar-BOL, in La Paz, and beat Cerro Porteño-PAR, at home, but remain bottom of group C, being the only one with a negative goal difference. Winning three points against Barcelona-EQU, therefore, could be fundamental for a possible future qualification for the round of 16 of the competition.
The good news is that players like Rony and Veiga, who even started in the win against Corinthians last Saturday (29), for Brasileirao, are already 100% recovered and available to Abel Ferreira, without any type of restriction. Mayke was the starting right-back in place of Marcos Rocha, who was injured. Bruno Tabata, in transition, and Atuesta, recovering from knee surgery, are still short.
