Dino calls voicemail to investigate possible abusive practices committed by Google

The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, said on Monday 1st that he will call the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) to investigate the possibility of abusive practices committed by so-called big technologies, such as Google.

“I refer the question to the analysis of the National Consumer Secretariat, an agency of the Ministry of Justice, given the possibility of the configuration of abusive practices by companies”, said Dino on social media. The minister did not specify which companies they would be, but he did respond to a posting on Twitter that mentioned Google.

So-called big techs have increased pressure against the vote on the Fake News bill. Google, in particular, has included a link on its main page with the following sentence: “PL fake news can make your Internet connection worse.” Dino referred to this practice when he said online that he had triggered Senacon.

The pressure from companies, and from some parliamentarians, has been going on since last week, when the Chamber approved the urgent request for the Fake News Bill, a proposal that regulates social networks. In practice, urgency ensures that the matter is dealt with more quickly, as it dispenses with formalities and allows the text to be voted directly in plenary.

The companies, however, with the support of the deputies, have defended the establishment of a special commission to investigate the validity of the proposal. The mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), rejected the request, which was also made by MPs, and said that the issue had already been under discussion for more than three years.

Despite the fact that the Chamber approved the urgency, as agreed with the top party leaders, Lira had to use an internal regiment to reduce the number of votes needed for approval – which, with an absolute majority, would have been 257.

This Tuesday 2, the Speaker of the Chamber will once again meet the leaders to evaluate whether to maintain the merit vote, given that, behind the scenes, it is calculated that there is a risk of defeat.
