Serena Williams confirmed she’s expecting her second baby on Monday, telling reporters at New York’s Met Gala that there were “three of us” on the red carpet, where she arrived with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.
The multiple-time US champion announced last year that she was “evolving from tennis,” writing in a Vogue article that she wanted to expand her family after welcoming daughter Olympia in 2017.
“I was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala,” Williams said in a TikTok post Monday night.
Williams, a longtime friend of Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and co-chair of the Met Gala, is a regular at the annual event benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and wore a skintight black gown with a white skirt on Monday.
The theme of this year’s gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Beauty Line,” in honor of the late Chanel designer.
He also had a friend on the red carpet, with former Swiss tennis player Roger Federer in attendance as co-chair of the event.
Footage from the red carpet showed Ohanian, entrepreneur and co-founder of Reddit, gently placing his hand on Williams, 41,’s stomach.
The announcement made a return to competitive tennis seem highly unlikely for Williams, one of the most decorated athletes in the sport’s history.
