The new variety brings together qualities that facilitate grazing management
Brachiaria are forage plants widely used in pastures for livestock. They are generally known for their robustness and ease of handling. However, growing these vegetables can be difficult in some regions due to factors such as pests, lack of nutrients and extreme climatic variations. In this sense, the right choice of the variety of brachiaria to be planted becomes fundamental for guaranteeing the quality of the pastures and the health of the livestock.
Experts explain that, in the early 1970s, the introduction of Decumbens brachiaria represented a real revolution in the pastures of the Brazilian cerrado, allowing the opening of new areas. However, the pastures began to come under sharpshooter attacks. Since 1984, the arrival of the Marandu brachiaria has triggered a second revolution in the sector, providing greater resistance to parasites. However, this variety, which has become dominant in Brazil, has brought other challenges, as it has lost the excellent characteristics contained in Decumbens pastures, such as adaptability to more acidic soils, resistance to drought and the presence of stolons that root in the soil and they perform an excellent cover performance.
However, these difficulties can already be solved thanks to the Dunamis brachiaria hybrid, a new cultivar developed by Milagro Agro Brasil and protagonist of the third revolution in the sector. The plant is a hybrid resulting from the cross between Decumbens and Marandu, being able to offer the producer the best qualities of these two varieties.
The main feature of Dunamis, according to Milagro Agro Brasil, is the presence of stolons that root in the ground. These stolons exist in Decumbens, but are absent in Marandu, which is currently the most planted brachiaria in the world. Thanks to this characteristic, Dunamis can facilitate land cover, reduce degradation of the cultivated area and increase the longevity of the pasture, consequently improving productivity, sustainability and profitability for the farmer. It also has other advantages over other brachiaria, such as:
- Initial growth much higher than that of Marandu and Decumbens;
- Resistance to the grasshopper;
- Easy adaptation to low fertility (pH 4.8-5.5), sandy soils with steep slopes;
- Better erosion control;
- Higher drought tolerance than Marandu;
- Good tolerance to short periods of stagnation (15 to 30 days) compared to Marandu (3 to 6 days);
- Tolerance to Rhizoctonia (one of the fungi that causes sudden death of brachiaria);
- Ease of planting in holes in sandy soil and without correction;
- Crude protein content and digestibility higher than that of Marandu.
Milagro Agro Brasil’s marketing and sales director, Alexandre Hemza, says that customers already using Dunamis brachiaria have reported benefits for their businesses. “In recent days I received the testimony of a customer who planted mombaça, one of the most used grasses for dairy cows. When he started planting Dunamis and the cows started to feed on this variety, they leapt from a productivity of 8 to 9 liters a day for an average of 12 liters a day,” he says.
Dunamis will also be present at Agrishow, one of the largest agricultural technology exhibitions in the world, which is expected to bring together around 200,000 people, in Ribeirão Preto, between 1 and 5 May. According to Alexandre Hemza, customers who wish can purchase the seeds during the fair at special conditions, which will not be offered during the rest of the year. “We’re a company that brings technology to the field in an accessible way. We’re going to reinforce that at this event,” he says. In addition to the reduced prices, the customer who closes a deal during the Agrishow will also be entitled to facilitated payment and delivery in the right period for sowing.
