The Minister of Environment and Climate Change was in Roraima in a delegation from the federal government to follow the situation.
Satellite monitoring still identifies illegal mining in indigenous Yanomami land, despite the fact that most mining sites have already been decommissioned.
This was stated by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, who was in Roraima this Monday (1st) in a federal government entourage to monitor the situation. The group was also made up of the Ministers of Health, Nisia Trindade; and indigenous peoples, Sonia Guajajara.
“We were able to observe in the flyover that there are several mines which have in fact been deactivated, they are abandoned, but some, according to satellite data, and from what we have been able to observe, are still active. And they will be deactivated”, declared Marina Silva in an interview at the end of the visit. The trip took place on the orders of the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvatwo days later an attack by prospectors left one native dead and two wounded.
The indigenous man who died, identified as Ilson Xirixana, acted as a sanitary agent in the region. According to the minister, 75% to 80% of prospectors who have occupied the region have already left the area.
In Boa Vista, the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, visited the survivors of the attack who are hospitalized in the General Hospital of Roraima (HGR), but out of danger. Their names are Otoniel Xirixana AND Venantius Xirixana. She regretted the attack and praised the work of the teams that provided aid to the victims. Nísia Trindade stressed that it is essential to ensure the safety of these professionals.
“The attack took place near a health center that we were able to open recently. This places for us the need, alongside the care of the indigenous people’s health, to take care of the workers in the area. We have to take care of those who take care of them.”.
Appeasement
Indigenous Peoples Minister Sônia Guajajara said the government was working to liberate Yanomami indigenous land without violence.
“Our concern is that everything happens as peacefully as possible. We do not encourage this conflict in any way, we do not want bloodshed. That is why we come here, once again, to bring this presence of the Brazilian state and strengthen the operation of liberation within the Yanomami territory”highlighted.
The National Secretary for Public Security of the Ministry of Justice, Tadeu Alencarwarned the invaders of indigenous land that the government will not tolerate the continuation of criminal actions in the area.
“The Brazilian state will not tolerate those who flagrantly, illegally and criminally balk at the decision to leave this territory with the original peoples, so that the state can play its role.”
