Security is the biggest concern of any cryptocurrency investor

Kaspersky Research identifies key barriers to cryptocurrency adoption – see the results

the recent research from Kaspersky showed that instability is one of the main barriers to cryptocurrency adoption in Brazil among those who have not yet invested in this modality. However, among investors, security is a concern for most respondents.

Among Brazilian respondents who invest in cryptocurrencies, 63% classify themselves as neophytes – that is, they started in the area less than a year ago – and 37% consider themselves already professionals. When asked if they have online security concerns, 55% cited online email or phone scams.

Interestingly, the same number of respondents also named cryptocurrency-themed scams, such as fake exchanges or fraudulent schemes using crypto assets, as a top concern.

Other issues of concern in Brazil are the leakage of personal data (53%), malware for mobile phones and tablets (51%), interception of data while using public Wi-Fi networks (50%) and the password theft via websites and emails. (49%).

Online scams scare investors

For Fabio Assolini, director of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team for Latin America, the concerns of Brazilians reflect the growing trend of online scams using the cryptocurrency theme. The main highlight is fake messages, which grew by 40% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

“Phishing is the main tactic of Brazilian cybercrime, as it is cheap and Brazilians are very creative, which allows them to create a convincing lure. Another strong method around here is banking trojans. Ghimob in 2020 was the first mobile RAT trojan ready to steal digital wallets. Today, practically all financial malware created in Brazil also targets the cryptoassets of its victims”, warns the director.

To protect yourself from this type of threat, the director recommends a lot of prudence and information.

“Cryptocurrencies are a new investment and, unfortunately, are not yet regulated in Brazil. It is necessary to be well informed about the types of investments and the companies behind the operations. This is the hardest part. To avoid online scams, just follow the same basic rules: check the addresses before clicking, do not enter personal data on unknown sites and be careful when opening attachments or downloading programs to your mobile phone”, says Assolini.

Recently, Kaspersky has released special features for the protection of cryptocurrencies and digital walletspresent in all products intended for the final consumer.
