“He was already my son under the car,” the mother of a young man who was run over saw the news before learning of the death

Matheus Campos da Silva was run over by app driver Christopher Rodrigues, 27, who mocked the young man’s death

Retired garbage collector Gina Campos, 45, was having the worst days of her life after the death of one of her sons, who was run over and ridiculed by an app driver identified as Christopher Rodrigues, 27. In an interview with The globeGina said she was watching television when she saw the news of the hit and run, not yet knowing that it was Matheus Campos da Silva, 21, her son.

“The reporter in the helicopter said something was going on on the road and said he’d come back later to see what it was. My son was already under the car,” she said.

The hit and run took place in the central region of São Paulo. At the time, Christopher used a social network to mock the young man’s death: “One less that makes the L,” he wrote. In a video also obtained by the newspaper, Matheus can be heard still alive, calling for help, but he refuses to help, claiming that he was committing a robbery in the region.

For the mother, no crime committed by her son justifies his death. “Why didn’t he arrest my son? I was going to thank him. Did you see him steal? Call the police, why didn’t he? Does he have a mother?” Gina asks.

It also details the profile of Matheus, described as calm. “It was 20, 30 reais, which he brought. It was little, but he also helped me with the Uber expenses that I have to use to do the hemodialysis sessions,” said Gina, referring to the boy’s work as a street vendor.

“What I do know is that he made a living selling his little things, bullets in his headlamp, water, cell phone cases. During his last hemodialysis he accompanied me and sold two cases to a lady who was there.” Matheus was one of the collector’s five children, the only son. He was the one who accompanied his mother to hemodialysis appointments and other tasks where she needed to be taken.

Now, having to deal with one piece of news after another about her son’s death, Gina asks for justice and hopes for the return of normality in her life, which she doesn’t know when it will achieve. “I trust God that my son’s killer will not go unpunished,” she says.

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat said it had already heard from the perpetrator of the hit and run and was awaiting the results of the expert reports, as well as hearing the witnesses on the case. The only punishment Christopher Rodrigues has received so far has been bans from the Uber and 99 platforms.
