Actress Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermione in the Harry Potter series, revealed in an interview with the Financial Times why she decided to take a break from her film career.
“I wasn’t very happy, to be honest. I think I felt a bit trapped,” she said. Emma added that the situation was even worse when she was forced to promote projects she had no control over. As she put it: “Being the face and spokesperson for the production that she could not be involved in the process”.
Emma also shared that she was held in charge of the projects, but had no say or say.
I started to realize that I just wanted to admit things where if someone criticized me, I could say, “Yeah, I screwed up. It was my decision. I should have done better.” In a way that didn’t make me hate myself.

New horizons for the actress
During this break with cinema – her last appearance was in “Little Women” (2019), which wrapped shooting in 2018 – Emma got the opportunity to write and direct an advertisement for the luxury brand Prada. See below:

People always told me I should direct and produce, even when I was in it [Harry] Potter. I was concerned that it was just technical, not creative, and that I couldn’t bring what I think is probably my ability […] Being a director seemed unattainable.

In best “one thing leads to another” style, Emma hinted that she’s also received an invitation to direct a music video. However, she did not reveal which artist or band. I just said “someone you know”.
Finally, the actress didn’t rule out returning to the big screen, she just said she was taking her time. “I am happy to sit back and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do that without having to fragment into different faces and people. And I don’t want to go into robot mode anymore.”
