Coach Alex was sacked by Avaí last Wednesday after the 3-0 defeat against Vila Nova in Série B. to the club and the fans.
“I want to thank the president and all the management. I want to thank all the employees of the company, all the technical commission and the staff, the Aviano fans and all the players. Today I retire and from afar I will be another fan. May everyone work a lot and achieve the biggest goal. Thank you Avaí for the huge opportunity,” he said.
In the comments, some players and Avai staff praised Alex’s work and regretted the decision. Fans of Fenerbahçe, where the former player was an idol from 2004 to 2012, have also left messages of support.
The 45-year-old coach had been with the Santa Catarina team since November last year, his first job with a professional team. Previously, Alex had only coached the sub-20 team at São Paulo, where he remained between April 2021 and October 2022.
In Série B, Leão da Ilha got off to a poor start and suffered his third defeat in four rounds, remaining at the bottom of the table. Avaí’s next game will be next Saturday when they visit Tombense at the Estádio Soares de Azevedo, in Muriaé (MG).
