The mayor of Ilhabela asks the population to uproot the vegetation; the entity wants a police investigation

Toninho Colucci called on residents to pick up the jundu off the coast of the city on the north coast of SP. The environmentalists have presented a request for verification of the declaration to the Civil Police

After criticizing environmentalists, the mayor of Beautiful islandToninho Colucci (PL), encouraged the residents to tear the jundu, low native vegetation, from the beaches of the municipality. “Take it off, everyone goes there and pulls a foot”, said the mayor, in a public hearing on Thursday 27. The plant, which occupies the strip of sand not reached by the sea, helps to counter coastal erosion and is home to fauna autochthonous.

This Wednesday, the 3rd, the Coastal Conservation Institute (ICC) presented a Civil police request to open an investigation against the mayor for instigation to a crime against the environment.

The hearing, which discussed the Budget Law for 2024, brought together 90 participants in person and was accompanied by 2,200 Internet users through the Municipality’s official Facebook page. After criticizing environmental laws that would harm the city’s development, he asked for help from residents to remove vegetation from the beaches.

“Who can help me remove the jundu? The city hall can’t do it. I will be arrested, but if everyone removes one foot a day, quickly there won’t be any left,” he said.

Then he suggested that environmentalists are planting jundu on the beaches. “You have to fight with the environmentalists, who are in the majority, who pull these tricks.”

Later, he revealed that he is already answering trial due to the practice. “I’m already responding to the trial because I had the jundu removed in Praia do PerequĂȘ. You can’t collect 10 and get a bunch of hoes that all go to jail, but if every day we cut two, three, four… put an end to all of that. It’s not fair, but it’s society’s reaction against these rascals who plant,” he said.

In the complaint, the ICC recalled that the jundu vegetation has an important environmental function as a dune fixer, in the containment of marine erosion and in the protection of biodiversity in the coastal area. OR Forest code consider the restas – beach vegetation that includes the jundu – as a permanent conservation area. Deletion can only be authorized in cases of public utility. The Environmental Crimes Act defines the damage to the dune fixation vegetation as a crime, with imprisonment from 1 to 3 years, in addition to a fine.

The request for an investigation was supported by 12 other entities linked to the environmental issue of the north coast of SĂŁo Paulo. The Ilhabela Civilian Police confirmed that they have received the complaint from the ICC and informed that it will be investigated by the police authority.

The mayor was approached and sent a note through the city hall’s press office saying that he came out after being questioned by residents about the disorderly planting of jundu in a strip of sand.

“During a public hearing held in the northern region of Ilhabela, residents filed a complaint with Mayor Toninho Colucci over the disorderly planting of jundu by residence owners on a stretch of sand. The action reportedly prevents residents from locals, tourists and artisanal fishermen to enjoy the public space.”

The note continues by informing that “the administration strengthens its commitment to the environment and the care of the main native vegetation of the municipality. It reiterates that it acts in defense of the citizen of Ilhabela and in the fight against the disorderly planting of any type of vegetation in the areas public”.

In several cities on the coast of São Paulo, projects are underway for the recovery and conservation of degraded areas of the coast with the use of jundu. In Itanhaém, since 2015, the municipality has been developing the Jundu Project, mapping and delimiting the areas in which the plant operates in the recovery of degraded stretches by the sea. According to the municipality, the roots contain the advance of the tides and prevent erosion caused by storm surges. Similar projects are under development in Ubatuba, with the recovery of areas in Praia de Itamambuca, and in Praia Grande.
