ZOO brings together references from his career in debut ‘butterfly effect’

With 10 tracks, the work will be presented with a visual design in all songs

In his grandparents’ farm, the fundamental place of his childhood and adolescence, ZOO had his attention divided between two universes. The first was animals, observing the particularities of each other’s behavior – and how parallels could be drawn between them and the different moods of humans. The second universe was the DVD player, one of the few electronic devices in the house. More specifically, the concerts of artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, which she eagerly attended, memorizing lines and choreography.

“Efeito Butterfly”, his debut album released by Universal Music, combines these two worlds that have shaped his training. On the one hand, the metaphor of animals to deal with emotions: each track is associated with one of them, from the caterpillar to the swan, via the rabbit and the crocodile. On the other hand, the pop craftsmanship you learned on DVDs, the conceptual connection without edges.

— For me, pop is a concept. Everything must have a reason – says the singer.

The “butterfly effect” launch format reinforces the words of ZOO. Each of their songs has a clip, which is put together into a visual album, directed by ZOO and Gabriel Caviness. The videos will come out in sequence and, although each one has its own language and identity, they form a linked unit: the beginning of the clip refers to the end of the previous one and so on, in a great narration.

THE ROAD TO HERE

There was a walk between the grandparents’ farm and the “butterfly effect”. At the age of 14, when he was already writing the lyrics for his first songs, ZOO received a guitar from his father. Soon after, he started composing.

From Florianópolis, where she was born, she followed the international pop/rock scene and the São Paulo movement. Later, during a season in Salvador, she gets to know the local independent scene. But her music career would start in China, where she went in 2014 to work as a model. There she had the opportunity to sing in a club.

“I used to do four, five songs a night. And so I discovered that I needed to live on that, that’s what made me happy – says ZOO.

Back in Brazil, he started composing and recording scattered things with friends. He released a few singles, until he discovered, by chance, at a party where he met the DJ duo Jetlag Music, who had played one of his songs at the Rio de Janeiro edition of the EDC electronic music festival, and that it was been a success.

Soon after, the collaboration between ZOO and Jetlag begins, with her participating in their presentations. Together, they crossed stages such as Rock In Rio, Lollapalooza, Maracanã and Villa Mix Goiânia, singing in front of tens of thousands of people.

After the collaboration with Jetlag ended, ZOO began to think of their music in a way that was more focused on pop and R&B, instead of electronica. At the same time, he has invested in the influencer journey, with very respectable numbers: almost 5 million followers on Instagram, more than 1 million subscribers on the Youtube channel and 4 million on TikTok. In the pandemic, however, he understood that he wanted to devote himself more to music.

‘BUTTERFLY EFFECT’

In “butterfly effect”, ZOO somehow tells this story, with the help of producers Pablo Bispo and Ruxell. The instrumental vignette “metamorphosis” opens the record surprisingly when you expect energetic pop shock. It establishes a playful and calm, even naive vibe (“It sounds like Disney music,” he jokes). The animal associated with her is the caterpillar, which embodies the power of transformation.

The title track, in the sequence, whose associated animal is the butterfly itself, already has another imprint, more assertive in its basses and in its strong refrain, repeated in a loop: “No one forgets / My butterfly effect / That one doesn’t come out out of your head / That doesn’t come out”. The lyrics talk about transformation and the desire for transformation.

“nothing to lose” sings of freedom in the voice of a woman ending a toxic relationship. The animal that represents it is a bird. With freedom in place, the space opens up to “pick you up”, defined by ZOO as “making music”, with lines like “I’m not talking about love/ I’m talking about pleasure”. Your pet is a crocodile.

In “panther” (represented by the animal in the title and released in January), ZOO wanted to bring a reference to the zouk, the rhythm he loves. In the text he appropriates the historical meme of “tapa na pantera”, in a connotation of seduction, but without renouncing the original context. look here https://www.terra.com.br/parceiros/cucamonga/zoo-reune-referencias-da-sua-trajetoria-no-debute-efeito-borboleta,468f178d5d6992be2c5543fe73a36ca8cmam1iau.html

“he loves me or loves me” documents the fire of passion, the desire to always be together. His pet is the insatiable rabbit.

“It’s the culmination of that moment of passion when I met Chris. That’s why I called him to play with me in the clip – says ZOO.

The “breathing” interlude lowers the temperature and acts on the record exactly like a breath. The whale is the animal associated with the stripe.

After catching his breath, “lama da noche” arrives, which flirts with trap and is the most danceable and heaviest (in terms of rhythm) of the record. Her pet is the bat. ZOO calls it “an empowerment song”.

— We can and should be the masters of our own lives. That’s why I used the image of this flower that blooms at night, with a delicious scent — explains ZOO, who mentions his career as an influencer in the text: — I sing: “Because success is not only about glory / The influence it has always been part of my story.”

The romantic “secret formula” records another moment of her relationship with Chris: stable love, the complicity of marriage. The swan, with its image of purity, represents it.

The record closes with the good-natured lightness of “flower of the skin”. The text plays with metaphors with a double meaning: “This kiss you have / Taste of nature / It enhances your beauty / It sharpens my senses / It takes me far away / It makes me travel / It pulls me, squeezes me and lights me up”. The arrangement follows the mood, with its reggae accent, the effects that change the texture of the voices, the participation of the singer Grag Queen. Your pet is the cute ladybug. The music video for the track was also made available today. Check it out here.

In June, the album gets a deluxe release, with three more tracks and three clips tying up the final loop in the “butterfly effect” package. Also because, for ZOO, pop is basically a concept.
