Acclaimed ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski is stepping a little closer to the ground with his upcoming Formula 1 film, starring Brad Pitt as a retired racing driver who is brought back to the track for one last race.
The duo are teaming up with Jerry Bruckheimer, in what may be the most accurate racing movie of all time. And to achieve this, they are even forming a racing team that will be filming on-track for the last half of the 2023 F1 season, with Pitt, among others, driving real F1 racing cars in front of the camera.
Bruckheimer and Kosinski reunite after working together on the “Maverick” with historic results and will film all the races of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone until the end of the season. The car Pitt will be driving was designed by Mercedes, a manufacturer that won seven Formula 1 world championships between 2014 and 2020 with Lewis Hamilton.
Technology from “Top Gun: Maverick” to incorporate?
Kosinski’s team is using the technology and lessons learned from filming inside the cockpits of “Maverick” fighters, developing over the course of 18 months what it has called “the smallest mobile 6K camera ever”, which will allow the filmmaker to capture incredibly visceral footage from inside the cockpit of race cars, which are capable of speeds of up to 360km/h. That should mean plenty of striking pictures of Pitt behind the wheel.
The film has Lewis Hamilton as a consultant and producer on the film along with Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Pitt’s production company, Plan B. Damson Idris was recently cast opposite Pitt in the film, who is also co-writing with Ehren. he was nominated for an Oscar with Kosinski for the screenplay of “Maverick”.
Speaking about the project, Hamilton said: “I have high hopes for it. I know we will make the best racing movie there has ever been, visually as well, and we will work to make sure we capture the hearts of all the fans.”
