‘Oppenheimer’: The reason why Cillian Murphy, star of ‘Peaky Blinders’, was “desperate” to star in the new Christopher Nolan

“It seemed like the right time to take on more responsibility. And it turned out to be a big one.”

Cillian Murphy is a veteran when it comes to Christopher Nolan movies. However, despite having participated in five of the director’s films, so far I had never done it with a leading rolesomething that (although it was hard for him to admit) he wanted desperately.

After being part of the cast of the ‘Dark Knight trilogy’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’, comes ‘Oppenheimer’ and the opportunity for the Irish actor to take his deserved place.

This drama about the theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, will see Murphy as the “father” of the atomic bomb.

recently speaking with Associated Pressthe interpreter acknowledged having been “desperate” to get a leading role under Nolan’s orders.

“I’ve always told (publicly and privately) Chris that if I’m available and he wants me in a movie, I’ll be there.. I don’t really care about the size of the character,” Murphy said. “But inside… secretly, I was desperate to make a lead out of him.”

However, despite the fact that his wishes have finally been fulfilled, the way in which he received the news was not exactly “a romantic moment”. As the actor joked, the director’s English character had transformed the big moment.

“He’s so discreet and critical of himself… And his English ways… He just told me, ‘Listen, I’ve written a script, it’s about Oppenheimer. I wish you were my Oppenheimer‘,” Murphy explained.

“It was a great day… We have this mutual understanding going back a long time, and a close trust and respect. It seemed like the right time to take on more responsibility. And it turned out that it was one of the greats.

‘Oppenheimer’ adapts the novel published by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’. In it, the internal conflict of the scientist is described in his course towards the creation of the weapon of mass destruction, during the Second World War.

As Murphy continued, “You realize that it’s a huge responsibility. He was complex and contradictory, as well as iconic,” he shared about his character. “But, You know, you’re with one of the great directors in history. I felt confident doing it with Chris.

It has had a profound impact on my life, creatively and professionally. He has always offered me very interesting roles and they have all seemed challenging to me. I love being on their shoots.”

“The main issue is how he will present it,” added the protagonist on the tape. “I think people will be surprised. Anything you say will sound absurd compared to what the movie will be like in the theater.

Accompanying Murphy in the cast we can find performers such as: Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Leslie Groves Jr. and Robert Downey Jr., Florence PughBenny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine.

The film will hit theaters in Spain on July 21 of this year.
